These are lovely. They look wooden and are beautifully painted. Are they broaches or ornaments or what? and how big are they?

Thank you for your comment. The birds you are referring to were made by Japanese-Americans during their internment during World War II. The images are from the book "The Art of Goman: Arts and Crafts from Japanese-American Internment Camps 1942-1946" by Delphine Hirasuna.
These "small birds" are about 12 cm on average and were made from scraps of wood, painted and lacquered. The feet were created using bits of metal fence or chicken wire. The Goman exhibit does contain some of these birds made by Himeko Fukuhara and Kazuko Matsumoto and unidentified others from the camps of Arizona and Colorado though they apparently were commonly created in other camps as well.
